Gaeltacht Tournament 1994

This song was composed by Padraig O’Connell, Cappanagrown, to celebrate the victory of Dromid pearses in the 1994 All-Ireland Gaeltacht tournament in Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal.

Come all ye lads and listen, we’re the All-Ireland Gaeltacht team

We won it up in Donegal, you’d think it was a  dream

From a little place called Dromid, to far away Gaoth Dobhair

We proved that we were Ireland’s best in the year of ’94.

Chorus

Hurrah for all the Gaeltacht teams who fought the gallant fight

Hurrah for Dromid Pearses who displayed maroon and white.

Jimmy Connell stood between the posts and guarded safe our net

On that All-Ireland medal his heart was surely set

Donie Curran and John Sheehan they were sound at the back

The bright haired blondie Denis broke up numerous attacks

Our half back line was solid, the opponents ran to ground

There was Mangan, James and Mikey they never let us down

At midfield we had Damien, he was our pride and joy

By his side was Daly, the man from Islandboy

Chorus

Our forwards played superbly, they were fitter than a fiddle

Dan Sheehan left, Pats Connor right and Bobby in the middle

Jack Connor’s determination held together this great team

With help from Seanie Leary and the spirited Fr. Keane

We had some brilliant substitutes, those I now must honour

There was Tim and James, Gerald Shea the post, Patie and Sean Connor

Two minutes to go we’re down one point, we’re left there in a trance

But a brilliant point from Ciaran’s free gave us another chance.

Chorus

In extra time we battled on to get that early lead

We held our heads, we played our best, no goals did we concede

When the final whistle blew, we were just one point up

But that was all we needed for now we’d won the cup

Our selectors were magnificent, they were like the three wise men

Padraig, Davey and Donie, I will praise him once again

For several years we waited but now we achieved our aim

The Pearses name is written in the golden hall of fame.

Chorus

Three cheers for our supporters they were so proud of us

They travelled in great numbers, by coach, by car and bus

The craic and the excitement, it would fill your heart with glee

As the bonfires blazed so brightly ‘round the tavern in Cillin Liath

Bhí tínte cnámha ag lasadh sa pharóiste thiar is thall

Chun fáílte a chur roimh ár laochra a bhí ag teacht ó Dún na nGall

Agus anois sura bhfaighfidh sibh chun críoch a chur le mo scéal
